Nonesuch Records is a remarkable label with a list of artists that range form John Adams to Wilco. Over the years I have art directed and designed branding and packaging for many of the recording artists on the Nonesuch label.

WhatTheBook.org is an interactive poll designed by myself and Tony Chu to provide a space for people to display their feelings about the changing form of books. The site was created in conjunction with the AIGA "50 Books/ 50 Covers" exhibition, an annual showcase of the best in book design. Visitors select AGREE or DISAGREE to seven statements that relate to the function of physical books and ebooks in various scenarios that touch their lives. The statements are as follows:

I silently judge people by their bookshelves.
I would love to be picked up in a bookstore.
A book has made me so angry I've thrown it against the wall.
I would never give an ebook as a gift.
Decorating with books is perverse.
The Internet is as important as sex.
I want to own nothing.

A virtual book is added to a shelf to register the response. In the gallery of the National Design Center in New York, I designed an actual 12 ft. wide bookshelf with fellow grad student Michael Yap where visitors respond to the same statements by shelving a physical book, red books for AGREE and black books for DISAGREE. The data is collected over time and the shelf gets reset after it can hold no more books.

At the end of the interaction on whatthebook.org there is a prompt to write a new definition of "book." Once submitted, the definition can be read and shared. In the gallery, a large chalkboard provides a place for new definitions to be written, edited, and displayed as well. The website feeds definitions to the gallery at the beginning of the day. Today we have collected nearly 1,500 book definitions on the website. The show closes on February 23rd, but the website will remain online through the end of 2012. The second phase of the project will be to analyze the data and share it. You can read the definitions by filling out the form and submitting a definition or by visiting www.whatthebook.org/definition. Your ideas for sharing, preserving or displaying the data are welcome. @badewilde.

Martha Stewart Living redesign, Barbara deWilde magazine design, design

Martha Stewart Living redesign: before and after.
In 2001, the executive creative director and publisher asked me to redesign the magazine to: 1. appeal to a younger reader 2. make the magazine more readable 3. make the projects and recipes less intimidating and 4. make the magazine easier to produce as it grew from ten issues to 14 issues a year.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/EggCupCover.jpg" width="650" height="750" width_o="650" height_o="750" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/EggCupCover_o.jpg" data-mid="14538810" border="0" align="left"/>

New Typeface
The existing magazine used four typefaces: Joanna, Perpetua Italic, and MSL Gothic, with the occasional script. For the redesign I worked with the Hoefler & Frere-Jones type foundry to develop two new and proprietary typefaces that would reduce the number of type styles in the magazine, while increasing their functionality. The first font was the 'workhorse' font, Archer. Archer has a large lower case x-height that makes it easy to read in text sizes, but it also looks beautiful when enlarged in headlines. Redundant subheads were removed throughout the magazine. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Archer.gif" width="568" height="768" width_o="568" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Archer_o.gif" data-mid="4264496" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Ask-Martha_BEFORE_BORDER2.gif" width="565" height="700" width_o="565" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Ask-Martha_BEFORE_BORDER2_o.gif" data-mid="4264685" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/ASK-MARTHA.gif" width="550" height="700" width_o="550" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/ASK-MARTHA_o.gif" data-mid="4264700" border="0" align="left"/>

New Layouts
In the existing magazine the opening pages for front-of-book stories did not have enough variation. In the redesigned magazine, designers could choose from different templates and open a story with a full bleed photo, a smaller inset photo, or multiple images, etc. As often as possible, recipes run in the articles where they are featured instead of in the back of the magazine. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Opener-1.gif" width="567" height="700" width_o="567" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Opener-1_o.gif" data-mid="4256781" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Opener-3.gif" width="567" height="700" width_o="567" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Opener-3_o.gif" data-mid="4256913" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/opener-2.gif" width="567" height="700" width_o="567" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/opener-2_o.gif" data-mid="4256932" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Opening-5.gif" width="570" height="700" width_o="570" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Opening-5_o.gif" data-mid="4309986" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Opener-4b.gif" width="567" height="700" width_o="567" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/Opener-4b_o.gif" data-mid="4265663" border="0" align="left"/>

Themed Columns
Some columns like Fit To Eat were themed, but the theme was buried in the first caption. The redesign gives a full page to the dietary idea. On the following pages, the recipes run next to the photo of the dish and the nutritional information is made more visible. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/FitToEat-after.gif" width="567" height="700" width_o="567" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/FitToEat-after_o.gif" data-mid="4257025" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/FitToEat2-after.gif" width="567" height="700" width_o="567" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/FitToEat2-after_o.gif" data-mid="4257031" border="0" align="left"/>

New Glossaries and Sidebar Style Sheets
MSL is known for its glossaries: apples of all varieties, flowers, tools. In the old magazine these were always photographed in a single image, which was difficult to add type to. The textured backgrounds made the type difficult to read and required a lot of retouching. In the new design, the glossaries could be photographed as silhouettes and the sidebar text styled to highlight more information. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/glossary-after.gif" width="540" height="700" width_o="540" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/882323/glossary-after_o.gif" data-mid="4697355" border="0" align="left"/>

Changes to the feature well and another new typeface
I introduced another new typeface for use in the well, or main feature section of the magazine. In addition to Archer, the magazine needed an elegant font. In came Surveyor, also designed by the Hoefler & Frere-Jones type foundry. Below, in the well opener, the word 'May' is set in Surveyor. The new photography by Stephen Lewis opened this section with a clean, modern photo that represented the month.

Changes to the well, continued
In additional to the typographic changes, the photography became more in focus and graphic. The spreads below show the change in photography as well as the use of Archer and Surveyor as the display typefaces.

Everyman’s Library Relaunch
Everyman’s Library was founded in England in1906 with the following mission: ‘to appeal to every kind of reader: the worker, the student, the cultured man, the child, the man and the woman’, so that ‘for a few shillings the reader may have a whole bookshelf of the immortals; for five pounds a man may be intellectually rich for life.’

In 1991, Everyman’s Library was relaunched with the help of Random House in the UK and Alfred A. Knopf in the US. The new library featured cloth bindings, acid-free paper, silk ribbon-markers, and new introductions and chronologies by leading scholars and writers. I was asked to redesign the library under the art direction of Carol Devine Carson at Alfred A. Knopf. Today, there are over 300 authors, nearly 500 titles, in the Everyman's Library catalog. Net sales are over 15 million.

logo design, engraved by Christopher Wormell.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/Everyman-s-logo.gif" width="478" height="350" width_o="478" height_o="350" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/Everyman-s-logo_o.gif" data-mid="4306055" border="0" align="left"/>

The original series featured two-color stamping and color-coded cloth binding. Each book has a colored cloth binding denoting the period of the work: scarlet = Contemporary Classics (not shown); navy = 20th Century; burgundy = Victorian Literature/19th Century; dark green = Pre-Victorian/Romantic/18th Century; light blue = 17th Century and Earlier; sand = Poetry.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/EL-bindings2.jpg" width="670" height="622" width_o="968" height_o="900" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/EL-bindings2_o.jpg" data-mid="4325654" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/EL-bindings.gif" width="670" height="593" width_o="1016" height_o="900" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/EL-bindings_o.gif" data-mid="4325562" border="0" align="left"/>

Contemporary Classics. Each Contemporary Classic title features a duotone of the author overprinted with metallic gold stripes. The stripes unify the series. In the entire Everyman's Library, the spine designs are very decorative to encourage the volumes to be shelved together and, because these are classics and not new publications, the books would most likely be seen spine out in a store or home library.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/ELContemporaries2.gif" width="670" height="622" width_o="968" height_o="900" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/ELContemporaries2_o.gif" data-mid="4692109" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/contemporaries-spines5.gif" width="670" height="644" width_o="936" height_o="900" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/contemporaries-spines5_o.gif" data-mid="4318146" border="0" align="left"/>

Pocket Poets. The Pocket Poets series has two jacket styles. The striped color jackets denote work by a single author. The books with imagery denote compiled themes. Each spine has a different design inspired by the writing. (with art direction by Abby Weintraub and Carol Carson.)
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/ELPoetry.gif" width="660" height="800" width_o="660" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/ELPoetry_o.gif" data-mid="4317984" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/ELPoetrySpines3.jpg" width="655" height="800" width_o="655" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/ELPoetrySpines3_o.jpg" data-mid="4875429" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/new-Poetry4.jpg" width="656" height="800" width_o="656" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/new-Poetry4_o.jpg" data-mid="4875691" border="0" align="left"/>

Children's Classics. The Children's Classics series has different colored cloth bindings, black and gold stamping, and tipped-in labels. The cover art is a colorized version of artwork from the interior of the book. The spines are elaborately stamped as well.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/children-s-front2.jpg" width="670" height="577" width_o="1044" height_o="900" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/children-s-front2_o.jpg" data-mid="4318098" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/ELChildren-s-endpapers.jpg" width="670" height="468" width_o="1002" height_o="700" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/ELChildren-s-endpapers_o.jpg" data-mid="4446875" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/children-s-spines3.gif" width="670" height="535" width_o="1082" height_o="865" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/children-s-spines3_o.gif" data-mid="4460419" border="0" align="left"/>

Adult Classics. The Everyman's Classics series (updated by Abby Weintraub and Carol Carol) takes the original series design and adds color, metallic gold dots, and imagery to create a traditional jacket. Below, a jacket I designed for Mary Shelley. The photograph is from the George Eastman Collection.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/Frankenstein.gif" width="670" height="590" width_o="1021" height_o="900" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/72338/874850/Frankenstein_o.gif" data-mid="4339250" border="0" align="left"/>

I have designed a lot (hundreds) of book jackets over the years, mostly for the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, but also for other publishers: Simon and Schuster, FSG, The Penguin Press, W.W. Norton. This edited portfolio includes the work that has won design awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Type Director's Club, the Art Director's Club, and other graphic design organizations...(or they are my favorites.)
